Stories & Legends
Varanasi, also known as Kashi, is a city woven with timeless
stories, myths, and legends that have been passed down through generations.
These sacred narratives form the spiritual foundation of the city and give
Varanasi its unique mystical character.
According to ancient belief, Lord Shiva himself founded
Varanasi and declared it his eternal abode. It is said that Kashi rests on
the trident (Trishul) of Lord Shiva, making it a city untouched by
time and destruction.
One of the most popular legends is associated with
Manikarnika Ghat. It is believed that Lord Vishnu performed
penance here, and when an earring (Manikarnika) of Goddess Parvati
fell at this spot, the ghat became sacred. Cremation at Manikarnika is believed
to grant Moksha, liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
The legend of Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga states that
Lord Shiva manifests here as an infinite pillar of light, symbolizing
supreme consciousness and eternal truth. Devotees believe that a visit to
this temple brings spiritual awakening and divine blessings.
Varanasi is also linked with the compassionate tale of
King Harishchandra, who chose truth and righteousness over
worldly comforts. His story is remembered at
Harishchandra Ghat, a place symbolizing sacrifice and moral
integrity.
Countless saints, sages, and poets have added to the living legends of
Varanasi through their teachings, songs, and experiences. These stories
continue to inspire pilgrims and travelers, making Varanasi not just a city,
but a living epic of faith, devotion, and wisdom.
